In December last year, I had the privilege to participate as an author in the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL from its Spanish name Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara) which is it’s the second largest book fair in the world after Frankfurt, and the biggest literary celebration of the Spanish-speaking world.

This was my second time attending the prestigious event, joining again the “The Inkwell Editorial Workshop” (El Tintero Taller Editorial from its Spanish name), a group of incredible independent writers led by writer Nadia Arce, which provide publishing opportunities to aspiring writers and to showcase their books in events such as the Guadalajara International Book Fair.

I had the privilege of meeting wonderful writers, learning about their books and publishing journeys and sharing the stage with some of them. Connecting with other authors is always invigorating and motivational for me, considering that sharing the same passion about books and writing is uplifting and provides a sense of community.

During the book fair, I participated in two book signing sessions, and a presentation of my second novel, where I was able to read a fragment to the audience, speak about the inspiration behind the story, but importantly, the current relevancy of the topics I delve into in the novel. Touching on topics about authoritarianism, historic gender inequality, philosophical debates and the intrinsicality between life and death.

A moment that I’ll treasure was when a child approached me during my signing session, but instead of my novels the kid handed me the picture book his mother had just bought him. It was a tender moment for me, because even when I was not the author of the picture book, in the eyes of the child, I was an author worth getting in the line to get an autograph from.

All in all, it was fantastic to attend the Guadalajara International Book Fair as a published author for a second time. Having my novels exposed to the world, even daunting, it’s always a rewarding experience. And as an independent writer, having the possibility of new readers finding your work, is priceless.

I want to take some time to thank my supporters and to Diana Arce and the wonderful The Inkwell Editorial Workshop team for enabling these spaces for independent writers.

Hopefully I can see you all next time at the book fair, when I present my new novel. So, stay tuned for the news.
